"Living with a New Hip Joint"

Mr. Jeremy Latham MA MCh FRCS(Orth)

Consultant Hip Surgeon

Hip resurfacing:

The "Andy Murray Procedure"

Hip resurfacing was developed to treat painful arthritis in younger and active patients. Now an established technique, the results are usually excellent in carefully selected patients.

So if you're a keen amateur sportsman, active in the local five-a-side football team, enjoy your golf...

...or maybe like Andy Murray you like to "play a little tennis"...

About Jeremy Latham

I’ve been a Hip Surgeon since 1998 when I was appointed to Southampton General Hospital. I trained in Oxford, Adelaide and Birmingham and brought the technique of hip resurfacing into the region. I use different implants, materials and techniques depending on a patient’s particular needs and expectations, and I offer a bespoke and ‘hands on’ service. I strive for perfection in every case, from the simplest to the most difficult.

I specialise in primary and revision hip replacement surgery, and hip resurfacing.

My experience of and interest in hip surgery have led me to specialize more and more in complex hip replacements, for example in developmental dysplasia and Perthes’ disease, and revision hip surgery. The failures that we saw with some metal-on-metal hip replacements caused an epidemic of difficult revision cases and I’ve spent many years setting up clinical pathways both in the NHS and private sector to identify and treat these patients. I formed the Metal Hips Research Group to bring together scientists, engineers and surgeons to discuss the problems we share and to provide effective leadership and support.

Because of the clinical work and research in which I’ve been involved, I’m often invited to be on the faculties of national and international courses and meetings about hip surgery. I’m part of development teams developing a ceramic hip resurfacing and new designs of hip stems, and I’ve been an instructor on courses in primary and revision hip surgery.

I’m now in full-time private practice, having left the NHS in 2016. I am fully committed to the robust governance procedures required by the GMC and private hospitals in which I practice. My work is regularly audited and monitored.

Over the years I have helped thousands of patients with hip problems and there's a very good chance I can help you too.
